Hmmm…Let’s talk about it.
The movie is set in around a black family who is going through trying times. Single mom with 3 kids moves to a new city and has her mom live with them. Mom and daughter have a love hate relationship – mostly hate. Mom is an alcoholic and her parenting skills are called into question many times. Her kids are not thrilled about her and seems that all they know is pain. The Grandmother is white but clearly she has lived in the urban areas her whole life. Seems that the mothering she gave to her daughter is being passed down to her grand children but she is more nurturing to them than their mom is.

Strange occurrences start to take place in the house centering around the basement. Disgusting smells and flies buzzing around. Follow that with noises and weird activity from the kids. Mainly affecting the youngest child. He is seen talking with someone that isn’t visible to the naked eye and even tells his mom that he is talking to a friend named Trey. The more chaotic it gets in the house the more the activity seems to get. A social worker is hot on the moms case about the wellbeing of her kids and there is another woman creeping around watching them as well. Mom confronts the woman and she tells her that she is not around watching her family for the same reason the social worker is, she is there for a darker reason.

This woman knows what is happening to her family and tells her the truth about the house. A demon is present and her family is in danger. Mom dismisses her claims because the world is hard enough to invite tales of demons in her life. Soon she beings to change up because her youngest is getting worse. He is showing signs of typical on screen demon possession as well as the other kids, later in the movie. They have their moment to cast out the demon and eventually the family is united closer after going through the turmoil.
Now…this movie had me somewhat interested until the demonic activity started. This was a very poor attempt at an exorcist type movie. This was based on a true story but it was done very poorly. I was on the fence with it being a “Lee Daniels” movie because he is hit or miss with me, but this one he could of buried. True story or not, the dialogue could of been done better. The amount of cussing in general and from parent to child was hard to watch. Seemed to perpetuate the stereotype of how black families are in broken homes. He could of dumbed it down. Next, Glen Close, bless her. She is a legend but this one she should of passed on. I read that she took this role serious because to the truth behind it but this wasn’t it for her. When she because a demon, I was done. Not to mention when she started talking, oh my oh my oh my. The acting of the youngest child and the CGI for him was sub par. It was a miss all together.
The Deliverance needs to deliver my time back for watching. This is definitely not a must watch. Nobodyz Opinion – Trash.
