Shout out to the indie creators making big-screen moves right now. I’m telling you, this is how you do it. I think we’re definitely seeing the start of a new wave in cinema, and Iron Lung is leading the charge.
I’ll be real—when I first saw the poster and some of the still shots, I was intrigued, but I thought the joint looked a little janky. Then it started popping up all over my timeline, and once I realized it was actually in theaters, I knew I had to check it out. I wasn’t disappointed.
The Lore: A Sea of Blood
For those who don’t know (and I didn’t at first), this movie is based on a game. I’d never heard of the game, but comparing the shots from the game to the movie, man, he did it right. No corners were cut—the authenticity is on point.
The setup is wild:
- The Setting: A moon called AT-5.
- The Twist: The oceans aren’t water—it’s all human blood.
- The Backstory: Some kind of rapture or disaster happened, and humanity is basically on its last breath.
We’ve got our main character, Simon, a convicted murderer who’s “voluntold” to go down in this submersible. Then there’s Ava, who’s running the show. She sends him down to find something—she doesn’t even say what—with the promise that if he brings it back, he goes free. Simple as that.
Mastering the Minimalist Thriller
One of the dopest parts about this movie is that it’s shot entirely inside that submarine. I’ve mentioned before how much I love movies that take place in a single setting—think Phone Booth or Mercy. It’s not easy to pull off a whole story in one room, but Iron Lung nails it.
Because you’re submerged in blood, there is zero visibility. The only way Simon can see anything is by using an X-ray camera strapped to the joint. He’s snapping pictures as he logs his path, and the images he gets back? They’ll make you feel some type of way. It’s tense, it’s claustrophobic, and it’s creative.
The Markiplier Factor
I found out that Markiplier (Mark Fischbach) is a YouTuber, and honestly, I’d never heard of him before this. But look at the hustle: he funded it, wrote it, directed it, starred in it, and edited it.
Coming from a background of creating content, I appreciate that 100%. He had a great idea and executed it perfectly. I thought it might be trash, but it really wasn’t. It’s definitely worth the watch.
Final Verdict
It’s time to step out of the box. Small-screen content is cool, but I want to see more creators using that bread they’re making to put something legit on the big screen. Markiplier showed everyone the blueprint.
Go check it out when you get the chance.
