Did Wayne show flashes of the past
Lil Wayne is the GOAT mixtape rapper by far. No Ceilings, Dedication, Suffix, Prefix,Da Drought, the list can really go in forever. Classic series that are undeniable. The Carter series is his only album series. We are in a time where the mixtape is the same as an album. Wayne is from a time where there was a difference. Carter 1 & 2 were great. Carter 3 is a mainstream smash. After that things started to change. Health and business issues had us wait for Carter 4 and 5. Were they worth the wait? No. Were there some good songs? Yes. Something needs to be said about artists not knowing when to end a classic series. No matter what he drops. If it has the Carter name it will always be compared to the music of the past Carters.
There are 19 tracks on this album. The first few songs were the best of the album and honestly that isn’t saying much. In “Welcome to the Carter” one of the better beats on the album. He just raps. No hook just raps. Which is fine but if you go that route which he has done most of his career. It has to hit! In one bar he says “While I eat lil’ mama backwards like mignon filet”. That should tell you all you need to know about this track. I think some of the issue I have on this album is that Wayne has rapped A LOT. So much he doesn’t remember most of his music. This means we get a lot recycled bars. He raps a Topanga bar which he has done. He does a zit zit zit bar which he has done on a track with J. Cole a decade ago. BigX is a bright spot on the album. He raps the best hook by far. Jelly Roll sings a hook and it sounds like its supposed to be a bad Eminem song. The bright spot to the song is Big Sean who probably has the best verse on the whole album. Like, Wayne flipped “Banned from TV” did he forget he has a classic freestyle to it? On the song he raps his first verse and hook. Then he raps Nore’s verse and then proceeds to rap the hook for the rest of the song. It’s bad. Bono, His son, Lil Novi,Kodak and Wyclef please keep them away from a Wayne album.
The beats are bad. There’s no cohesion with the album. Its just seems like 19 random tracks were just put together. At that, everything seems outdated. No one is asking Wayne to be introspective but I think at his age he should be rapping with some type of substance in mind. When an artist doesn’t have a pulse on the culture it may be time. This here wasn’t high expectations for this album. With the super bowl stuff that went on and him feeling like he was snubbed. I was hoping he was going to give us more. On top of all that disappointment there was a Drake feature that I heard was supposed to be on this album. I didn’t get that either. We were hoping for Jordan on the Wizards but got Hakeem on the raptors.
Rating: 4.5/10
After listening to the Carter VI. This is by far the worst album he has ever dropped.
