YO! This one pleased the sick and twisted bone in my body, I’ll tell you what!

A highly anticipated flick that I didn’t see to much on before hand. I also went into it with much reservation. But it’s A24!!!! So why would I expect anything less than stellar.

Movie: Down and dirty

A bother and sister, by marriage, comes home and finds their father dead in the shower. Brother is the oldest but only 17, they are forced to go to a foster home. In 3 months, big brother will be 18 so he will take legal guardianship of his sister, who is blind, and will live together. Just have to last 3 months she said. They are placed with this high energy woman. Quirky and weird, she opens her house to them but takes more to the sister than the brother. She has another foster child, a young boy who is mute and super strange. Throughout the movie we see that the woman is trying to drive a rift between the brother and sister. All the while, doing very strange things with the younger boy. We find out that the woman is trying to bring back her daughter who drowned in the backyard. We also, over time, realize she is doing this by ritual. This involves human sacrifice and demons. She kills everyone in her way to sacrifice the sister and transfer her daughters soul into the sisters body.

There are so many layers to this so I’m giving you the quick synopsis.

Hype: Wroth it all

The VCR tape visuals were in your face. They didn’t sugar coat a damn thing. If it’s nasty, it’s nasty. If It’s fucked up, it’s fucked. If It’s disturbing, gory, it’s all of the above. I can’t remember the last time I saw a movie with so many holes in it. Surprisingly, that was a good thing! We see the tape and the craziness on it from the beginning but never find out where it came from. How long ago was it made? Who made it? Then we see the child is a demon. Who is the demon? How was it conjured? What is the significance of the mark under the eye?

They did so well on giving just a little here and there and letting you fit the puzzle together as it goes. Most of it is not obvious. Sometimes I got frustrated wondering then here comes the “Damn” moment. Then they really hit you with a lot of cringe, writhe in your seat visuals. BOY! It takes a lot for me to cringe but this movie had me a hand full of times. The beauty of it was it wasn’t done with crescendo, jumps or anything. The camera was focused on teeth breaking from biting tables. Gums slicing from chewing on knives. Flesh tearing from being bitten and ripped ever so slowly. In all its gory glory.

I hope they make a prequel and a sequel. This movie set it up perfectly. This movie has the potential to be fire ass trilogy. Just 3 movies. Don’t milk it too much. In the prequel give us the origins of this ritual and show us a few instances where it worked and didn’t work. Then build it up to the woman and her daughter. In the sequel, somehow tie in 1 of the 2 survivors to getting involved again. Or the 2 come together to accomplish a mission. I don’t know lol and don’t care. A24 know what the hell they’re doing. I trust the process and can only wait for something to drop at this point.

Clearly I did not give the movie away because, GO SEE IT! Let us know what y’all think. Sick and enjoyed it like me 😊? Or are you on the other side of the spectrum and think I need help lol?
