This is the debut of Zoe Kravits who directed and produced this psychological thriller. A young woman, Frida, and her friend, Jess, work a forgetful job. They are middle pf the pack in society and Frida just wants more. She wants to be noticed and be a part of society in a meaningful way. A man names Slater, is a tech mogul who has it all. He is in the media a lot and a lot of people gravitate towards him. Frida’s job is working an event where Slater is going to be, and she sees an opportunity to make a move to be seen. During the event Frida and Jess change clothes and start to mingle among the higher ups. Frida is out of her element and is very clumsy. Keeping a low profile isn’t in the cards for her. She stumbles and fumbles her way and creates a moment where Slater approaches her. The result of it, Frida and Jess are invited to his private island for a vacation.

The island is secluded but very Zen. They are greeted with nice dresses and friendly staff. Food and drinks are plentiful to get the party started. There are other female guests and friends/associates of Slater there. The girls are also gifted with some perfume that is made on the island. They spray this on them every day. This is a key piece to it all. Party, drugs and alcohol are the ingredients every day. After a while Jess feels like something is off. Every morning, they notice small things like bruises and dirt under the nails. They don’t have any memory of how that happened. They don’t even know what day it is anymore.
At night, during some crazy partying, Jess gets bit by a snake. Natural to the island and venomous, she is told that she won’t die from it. The next day Jess tells Frida that she wants to leave. She doesn’t feel safe and they need to go. Frida, so self-absorbed about the moment that shes in, tells Jess that she needs to be there. Jess reluctantly agrees to stay for Frida. The next day Frida is walking about the island and see a red gift bag laying on the ground next to a small building. She goes in there and see a display of the bags with the perfume in them. Frida is startled by one of the workers who is holding a glass with green liquid in it. She is saying to Frida, Red Rabbit, and think she is drunk. Frida asks to try to liquid and finds it absolutely disgusting. She asks what it is and the worker points to a dead snake. It was the venom. Frida leaves immediately.

The next day Frida wakes up and feels different. She is having flashbacks of things happening. Three out of 4 girls are lounging around, and Frida asks about Jess. None of the girls know who she is talking about. Jess had the only lighter on the island that they all used. On the lighter she wrote her name. Frida shows them but they still have no idea who Jess is. They all ignore Frida and continue about their day. Frida begins to worry. Jess’s room is now a storage room as if she was never there. One of the girls goes to check on Frida and she tells her what’s been happening, what she’s been seeing and gets her to drink the venom, realizing that is the key to remembering. The create a plan to get the other girls to drink it as well by mixing it with tequila and they indulge.

The venom works and all the girls are now awakened. They remember all the terrible things that were done to them and turn on all the men. All hell breaks loose with intentions to kill. Frida turns the tables on Slater and uses the perfume against him. She doesn’t kill him but instead uses it to make him forget her and takes over his company. Now she is who she always wanted to be. Shes noticed and someone important in a class she would have never been able to achieve on her own.
Kravits did a number on this. The portrayal of controlling and mental and physical abuse is none like I have seen on screen before. She really thought outside the box on how it can be done. The crazy twist that Frida had been there before and never knew is wild as hell to me. Only plot hole was what was the perfume made of and how did it actually work? But when it all comes together, I think it was well done enough to not have to explain it. The terrible things that they were doing superseded it and how they turned the tables with no remorse. Looking forward to more from Zoe on this side of the camera.
