At the time of me writing this, Tyler, The Creator has dropped his 8th studio album titled Chromakopia. His first commercial single of the album is a track called Noid. Along with the track he dropped his first visuals, outside of the promotion visuals.
I’m slow. It took me two listens to figure out Noid was short for paranoid. Once the math started mathing, it all clicked. Yes, I know, the track opens with him saying “pair of paranoia’ but I was more focused on the music the first listen. Lets talk about some of the things that stood out to me in the video. The visuals shows St. Chroma, our protagonist, walking in a crowd of negativity. A girl is seen running up to him with extreme excitement. She is holding a phone that turns into a gun after a few frames. Given the topic of the single, it showed how inducing stress from unwanted attention could feel. It could feel the same as having a gun pointed at you. Next, the intense dancing with then Zambian lyrics start to play. The lyrics are fast and intense and his movements match it perfectly. Even with his gestures saying keep away or back up. This is followed up in a later scene where his is running frantically down the street. His movements keep in line with the lyrics style. At the end the lyrics play “someones keeping watch, I feel them in my shadow.” There is an Ariel view of him and after a few seconds his shadow seem to turn against him.
These are just the main things that stand out. The video in its entirety is a complete representation of the lyrics. Tyler gave us a cohesive song with matching visuals with no flaws. The thought put into it, as an artist, is unmatched and I say that with confidence. He brings to light events that have plagued other artists as well. The scene where he is in his house standing in front of the mirror and the reflection is of a home invasion. He is speaking to the incident with Pop Smoke. This is part of his brilliance that we have seen for some time now.
I think its easy to forget what a treasure Tyler is because he releases an album and disappears after. He has been writing producing and directing at the highest level for years now. This song also reminds me how he is one of the greatest story tellers music as ever seen. Noid is about paranoia from start to finish. There are zero filler words in all the of lyrics. Given the state of todays music, that is extremely hard to do. 98% of Chromakopia is comprised of such songs. The earliest I remember I even took notice was the Wolf album. The whole album is a story and notably the song Colossus is a testament to his skills. You have never heard a three and a half min song that is a no filler story from second 1 till the end.
I feel Tyler is overlooked in many ways musically. Noid reminds us of his genius. It serves as a prelude to what to expect for his new project. We will review the album in more depth later. For now, I just wanted to share some insights on Chromakopia. This project is well deserving of jumping into the music rotation for the foreseeable future.
