Some of my favorite genre of film to watch is action and war. Not all war movies are action and vice versa, but when they come together, it cant be a beautiful thing. In this case, ‘Land of Bad’ is that lovely creation.

Airmen Kinney, played by Liam Hemsworth, is a rookie officer who has never seen combat. He gets told he has been assigned to a Delta Force team to help on an extraction mission. He is not without doubt, as anyone would be. Delta Force is an elite team sent on missions that no one really wants to be apart of unless you’re cut from that special cloth. He is teamed up with Sgt. Abell, played by Luke Hemsworth, Sugar, played by Milo Ventimiglia and Bishop, played by Rickey Whittle. The team is accompanied by a survalence crew manned by CPT Eddie Grimm, referred to as ‘Reaper’, played by Russell Crowe and Staff Sgt. Nia Branson played by Chika Ikogwe. Their sole purpose is to provide overwatch and air to land ordinance if needed.

On ground, Delta Force squad gives Kinney a hard time, as any military unit would, especially if they are green to the situation but he is quick on his feet to give some reassurance that he’s not a liability. They get to the target area and the movie takes off. Identifying the enemy, they are immediately put in a situation because they watch an execution and attempted execution of a mother and child. All the while, Kinney is posted on a hard shelter and is compromised as the enemy is literally underneath him. They have to make a decision to stop the execution of the child which would give away their position or let it happen. Well, us military folk care about kids so…lets get the fighting! Shots fired, grenades detonated, all hell breaks lose. Their position is known and a gunfight ensues. Kinney’s position is apart from the rest and he watches as their spot is hit with an RPG. Assuming they are all dead within minuets, he gets out of there requesting extraction and guidance to the LZ. Reaper is vigilant and guides him to the extraction point. Once he gets there, everything seems good but once the helio comes in, gunfire is unleashed from damn near every direction.

During the battle, he discovers how they are able to know where he is under the cover of darkness because they have IR sights and can see his strobe. Ditching his gear, he gets out of there and goes on the run. He doesn’t get far and gets captured. As with any POW situation, he doesn’t get killed right away and is strung up. With no hope in sight he hears commotion outside the hut and in comes Sugar. Surprised that he is still alive, Sugar rescues Kinney and then gives him the bad news. Abell is dead but Bishop has been captured so they need to hike back to the original location and rescue him, ‘No Man Left Behind’.

Gathering their selves, they make their way back, eliminating targets along the way. Back state side, Reaper and Branson have now been on mission for over 24 hours. Reaper’s relationship with the command there is sketchy to say the least. He has been there for so long, he kind of does things he own way and rightfully so because is he excellent at what he does. Despite that, he is told he needs to go home and is relieved of his duty, switched out with another team. Kinney has called in a plan to drop 3 strikes in intervals with the plan to be out of there before the last one which will decimate the entire compound. Kinney and sugar get captured again. They are locked up and see Bishop. The time spent, they’re beaten and interrogated but the enemy leader. Second strike hits and causes chaos where they are at. Kinney gets away and is able to get to Bishop and in the commotion, he see’s the original asset they deployed for. They only have minuets to get out and call off the strike or they’re all dead. Kinney is successful but not without your nerves being tested.

This movie really gives us real perspective from the team on ground and what goes on behind the scenes, state side. The level of investment to the mission is profound showing how dedicated and serious it is to be apart of mission like this. Shout out to the Hemsworth brothers for showing us that Chis isn’t the only one who can take great lead roles. I would love to see just one more on this. Kind of like the “Extraction” series. Director Willam Eubank really hit it out the park with this and should keep the momentum going. Gun fights, air strikes, nail biting and intense scenes all culminated to a great piece of work.
